There are moments when the right decision is really clear - even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else.
A year ago today, I sent the email announcing I was closing my company.
After 14 years, I made that decision after a lot of prayer and a lot of thought. I was ready to move on. I wanted to focus on supporting other entrepreneurs, and there wasn’t space in my life to both run my company and coach my clients.
If I’m being honest, I was really feeling pulled in two directions and it wasn’t sustainable.
Before I made the call, I did what everyone told me to do - I spoke with a highly respected broker. They reviewed everything - financials, operations, the whole picture - and told me, “We can absolutely sell your business.”
I said, “Amazing! How long will that take?”
“6 to 12 months.”
And it became really clear to me in that moment - I didn’t want to wait another year. I was ready to move forward.
So much to their confusion, I said, “No, thank you,” and on April 2nd, I sent the email to our customers sharing that I was closing the company.
We sold through about 90% of our inventory in 10 hours and I did not see that coming.
And then something else happened:
By the end of that same week, I had three separate, legitimate inquiries from people who wanted to buy the business.
This was not on my bingo card.
Over time, one of them became the right fit and I did end up selling the business - after I had already decided to close it and after I had already emotionally moved on.
And yes - I got the revenue from that closing day sell-through and from the sale of the business, which still feels a little surreal to me.
But here’s what I keep coming back to -
I didn’t get there by chasing the “best” or most strategic outcome.
If anything, I made the opposite move, and most people did not understand it, but I made the decision that felt right for me. I trusted it. And I moved forward.
Even when it didn’t make sense on paper.
Even when it didn’t make sense to others.
This is the part that matters - whether you’re starting something, pivoting, or trying to figure out your next move, you don’t need more noise or more opinions.
You need to trust yourself.
And if you need help, I’m here.
If you’ve ever had a moment like this - where you knew what the right move was, even if it didn’t make sense - shoot me an email and tell me about it - [email protected]. I’d love to hear.
